They bought a few(okay, five) pregnancy tests.Disabled or not, (and a control freak within what seemed like a tiny sphere) Kyla wanted to be extra-sure. ) She wasn’t sure if she saw, or just imagined, the stares from everyione at the drugstore.
(Not seeing them from masked people had been a rare pandemic benefit Kyla had failed to appreciate until she had lost it again, she realized with a pang. Of course, maybe Kyla herself wasn’t the reason people stared. Jessica wore tiny skirts with flip-flops and had tattoos of the moon and the stars. People looked at her attendant a lot, and in a covetous way Kyla herself rarely rated. Maybe it was why she picked her instead of the more maternal types she talked to. To take up some of the looking.
Although, sometimes it didn’t help, as when they were checking out at the drugstore and, maybe the checker’s eyes widened at the bouquet of tests, and Jessica said “I offered to marry her but she wouldn’t have me.” Jessica kissed Kyla’s cheek with a noisy smack while a chill guy in line with them clapped.(As a joke or not, they couldn’t be sure.)
Kyla blushed, suddenly feeling the pressure of her strange situation anew, and it made her irritable.
“You’re not helping.”
“They’re going to look anyway…might as well have some fun with it.”
“I was just trying to keep my head down…” Kyla couldn’t find the end of her thought and waved her hand helplessly.
