What's your favourite TV network? Over the years, I've liked a few...now it seems like nobody has a unique style anymore.

2. If you could create your own channel, what would it be? arts, culture, some left-wing politics, maybe I'd bring the dramedy back...I still like them-- maybe I'm not alone!

3. What TV show did you watch as a child, that you wish they would bring back? Not that I really want *actual MASH* back, though America had lots of feelings about its involvement in KoreaitNam, but I would like to see a show with as varied an emotional template and room for character growth as MASH. Something funny, but less like "Well, they loved that, so let's do it twenty more times," Something that trusts us to figure stuff out a few times(Anti-war messaging and Very Special Episodes optional.)

4. What show have you always hated, and wonder why they ever made such a dumb show? I grew up in the 1980s, which gave me an unmatched opportunity to see the good, really bad, and indifferent from, practically the beginning of the form(thanks to cable-- I'm not a spirit that sits around watching TV or anything...years ago, I might have had more passion about that. But I will say, we might not be here now without "The Apprentice." #DeportMarkBurnett(I've had a lot of streaming access this year, for the first time, and I'm not sure if it makes me feel better or worse how hard it can be to tell "cult favorite" and "Swing and a miss," apart.

5. What TV show's seasons would you buy on DVD? I would have loved it if the reason I got such a great price on West Wing DVDs wasn't because Amazon either let half of them get scratched up or knew they would be. Maybe I should have gotten a *really* great "Take Your Chances" price. Anyway, never finished that rewatch...

so, maybe after a thousand more times, i might not feel "bad with computers" any more. Maybe.
here's the Friday five for this week:
Did you vote in your most recent applicable election? (If you're not yet old enough, do you plan to vote in the future?)
Yep. Vote-by-mail helps a lot!
2. Have you ever protested or attended a march?Yes, quite a few...virtual ones are not quite the same

3. What political issue is the most important to you?Health care, disability rights, income inequality...there are a lot.

4. Are you a member of a party in your country? If so, which?Holding down the Dems' left flank.

5. Do you ever plan to run for office?I've thought about it, but maybe my postings would count against me. And maybe I was just trying to picture a future and my job rubbed off a bit. Just don't want to be this, forever.

(at some point, have gotten away from my journal apart from this and the writing-goals things...)
This week's questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] silent_r_infork.

1. What was the most sick that you've ever been? When I was eleven, I had roseola, which is usually a disease for very small children(Not sure how I got it) that comes with spots and high fever. When I was twelve, I got chickenpox, which was exceedingly itchy and long-lasting at about two weeks. I was stupid and once ate a whole package of Oreos(Which I didn't even really want, as such...just wanted to throw caution to the wind or something, and it bit me on my bony disabled ass, like, instantly.) never have felt the same about oreos, but I feel worse that I ruined them for my mother, who cleaned up.

2. What disease are you afraid of getting?COVID, esp. long-form, dementia

3. Are you a big baby when it comes to taking medicine/shots for your illnesses? kind of. really don't like.

4. Is going to the doctor really THAT bad? Mostly, I don't like them. I had one in high school, though, that I got a crush on and was really glad I saw him for muscle pain, instead of something gross.

5. Would you have the flu twice a month if you were paid $1,000 for having it? Nothing with puking or diarrhea. I guess I'd be stuffed-up if someone paid, somehow, but I'd want some money up-front--time is, like, the one thing you can't replace.

. If you were a fruit, which would you be and why? When I'm sad about my life, which is often these days, I think I might be the one leftover banana that everyone has and doesn't eat.At my best, maybe a tangerine, because they are balanced between sweet and tart like me. I also eat them all the time.

2. If you wake up and smell smoke, and you have to get everybody (pets included) out of the house safely, but you have time to grab one item, what would you grab? I have an autographed copy of "The Corner" that I used to touch for writer's inspiration until I met David Simon virtually and felt like that might be odd.(I would have hated for a superstition to get back to him, for instance.)

3. If you were stuck on an island, who would be the one person you would want with you and why? I'm disabled...I think I need two. To that end, I nominate my mama and [personal profile] karlht

4. If you could change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be? Hate to play into a cliche, and I wish I could be one of those proud, defiant "wouldn't change a THING!1" crips, but I think I've gotten all I can out of The Wheelchair Experience. Proud tradition or not, sometimes I wanna drop it like a hot rock and have all the cheap sex I should have had in my twenties. But I've always been such a Grindstone Gal, I bet I'd make a million dollars and be like "But this is supposed to be the *fun* version!"

5. If you could spend the day with one famous person, dead or alive, who would you choose?Maybe I'd like to hang out with Matthew Perry and make *him* laugh for once. Maybe I'd invite [personal profile] zmayhem too. We were both fans and she died about the same time...it's a Thing. Like gum, it would be perfection!

Not sure answering this one is the greatest idea, but...
These questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] malloreigh.

1. What sets you apart from your friends? Depends. Sometimes I feel separate from both my disabled and abled friends. But in different ways. I feel like I've been on a different "journey"(ugh, so reality) than everyone I ever met. Kind of lonely, even when I know more people than ever.

2. What sets you apart from your family? None of them are writers. My mother just will not admit how different my life is from other people's. We don't fight much, but this is a real point of contention.

3. What sets you apart from your coworkers/fellow students? can I say everything but politics? Because they got to travel and be a part of things, and I'm about 51-going on 16.(I guess it keeps me young but in the most embarrassing, sweaty-palms, rookie kind of way...kind of hate it.

4. What is the one thing about you that is most unique? Besides being the broken Hummel figurine who, maybe because she almost died, could win the John Munch think-a-like contest? My ear for dialogue? My deeply disturbed sense of humor.

5. What is your most interesting quality?Probably the contrast between the outside and the inside.

hese questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] thegreymouser.

1. What was the best gift you received?I got a kitty, early one christmas.

2. What was the worst gift you received? My birthday is often close to back to school--I've gotten a few snotty head colds.

3. What gift did you wish for, but never got?Always kind of wanted an 80s-teen-movie crazy party, never had the right kind of life.

4. What was the best present you gave?I'm a great gift-giver.
5. What was the worst present you gave?A few years I was broke and really had to fake it.

oday's questions were brought to you by [livejournal.com profile] mmia.

1. How are you stereotypically female?
I'm emotional, like bright colors,am creative. I keep a journal.Diagnostically bad at math. kind of dislike sports.

2. How are you stereotypically male? I curse a lot, sometimes hide my feelings with a joke, and sometimes laugh at people. Not a great dresser, but I'm learning how I look and feel best.(not likely to pick a style that's painful or going to put me out.) I like reading and writing about crime and mob bosses, etc.

3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender?Because I don't live in a Rock Hudson movie, I don't really believe that there's a female brain or heart.

4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics?Definitely female.

5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be? While I don't need to do this to feel whole or anything like that, but if you could switch back and forth easily or with magic, I think I could learn a lot from being a guy for, say, a year, but I'm fine about being a woman, if not really thinking I get the most benefits in living it.(would really like to do something about this...not sure how)

oday's questions were brought to you by [livejournal.com profile] silent_r_infork.

1. If you could retroactively erase one TV show from the history of entertainment, which one would you choose?
"Lifestyles Of The Rich and Famous" et al. CEO worship has done a lot of damage.

2. Are you more like your mother or your father?Mostly mom, but when I get obsessed with things, that's more like my dad. Though we don't share obsessions.

3. If you could take a year-long vacation, what would you do?Among other things, go back to the Bay Area again.

4. Can you think of a reason not to answer this question? I'd say "Loose Lips sink ships," But I already feel like the oldest person who uses one of these accounts, anyway.(Not that I remember that--I just had grandparents.)

5. What's the nicest thing you've ever done for someone?I don't know...I try to share what I have and stuff like that, but sometimes I give myself too much credit for not doing the bitchiest things that float through my head sometimes...not sure I deserve those points.

(So these are Friday Five)
1. How far back can you trace your family tree? I know I had a relative in the Trail of Tears, so 1830s?

2. What is the most interesting (or strange) thing you've heard about one of your relatives? The Native side of my family? Crazy into nicknames. I don't know anyone's name on their birth certificate. My mother's birth certificate doesn't have anything to do with RL either...I used to think that maybe my grandfather did something classified or something, but now I think they just took the American passion for reinvention to the next level.

3. How do you feel about legacy names like John Henry Smith IV or naming children after other relatives? If I'd had a daughter and her last name worked with it, I might have used my grandmother's given name, Magda, which she never liked.

4. Would you consider yourself and/or your family to be traditional? We might have been, but, for a lot of reasons we are making it up as we go along. I'm kind of torn about that. It's nice to feel modern and new, but it might have been nice to see myself as a link in a chain and all that.

5. What is one tradition you have passed on to your children and/or plan to pass on to them? Most of our rituals have been adapted for either my disability or because my parents broke up. Not sure I'd want kids to deal with either of those things.

Would you rather have a fun job that doesn't pay well or a boring job that does? Never made a lot of money, but for today, I'd pick fun.Never had enough fun, either.

2. Would you sacrifice your morals for a job? Honestly? We all sell our bodies/time. Not sure How we fully avoid(I know we've backed up some...troubled candidates in the past to achieve some objectives, for instance. But I do think there are limits.)

3. Would you ever take a job that requires you to be in costume? Given that I grew up a little crippled blonde girl, I kind of feel that I've always had this.(Even definitely in a Certain Age, acquaintances still think they've heard me say "shit" for the first time. @@)I'm getting better at having the inside and the outside match, more, but, like, a chicken suit would seem like a step forward

4. What is your fantasy job? No-bullshit political advisor, successful fiction writer, Chris Hayes Has A Horrible Accident.

5. Would you like fries with that?Pretty much always.
chicating: I have a new dragon (Default)
Because I didn't feel well yesterday and didn't get to answer.
1. Have you taken notice of which films are nominated for Oscars this year?
Just from things I've seen on TV...been a bit head-down in politics and my own writing.
2. Do you plan to watch the Oscars ceremony?I don't really like ceremony or all that couture stuff so not my jam.although I've seen enough to know some of the cliches: Telling their kids to go to sleep, etc

3. How many of this year's Oscar nominated films have you seen?I haven't. Still don't feel safe about going to the theater and too many of the streamers have all their exclusives and stuff.

4. Do you plan to see more/any of the Oscar nominated films before the Oscars ceremony?Probably catching up from two years ago...not that I don't enjoy doing that.

5. Do you generally seek out and watch the film that wins Best Picture?I usually like to...I think it can be a real artistic snapshot of the film's era.
chicating: I have a new dragon (Default)
Ten years ago, what did you think you would be doing now?
Can I tell you how much "Not this," Wildest *hope* maybe studying writing, journalism, or policy at Berkeley or somewhere, but that was only a dream born of wanting to live closer to my friends, not about the book learning. Maybe I might have had a book come out or met someone to date. Not yet! she says, like a crazed optimist that she's not. But I haven't given up yet, because dig the exclamation point(rueful smile)

2. Where do you think you will be five years from now?
Part of me has been expecting to die suddenly for about the last ten years(There's not a HUGE organic basis for this, but a great many people with my diagnosis do tend to...pop a clot and not wake up one day. Even if I'm stronger than I look and all.(I'd pretty much have to be, too.) I think, though, that it's mostly that a way forward is hard to imagine.

3. Do you live life one day at a time or look to the future?
I think I'm a planner that had to shift to day-to-day thinking because there are no plans for women like me.

4. Do you wish you could go back in time and undo something in your life?
Yeah, but I can't agree on which thread to pull. I often wish I'd scraped up the $50 for that Hillary event that a FOF invited me to, but I was super-broke. On the other hand, that was a moment that shifted me left, so that feels like wishing my activism undone, but...

5. If you could send a message back in time and give a younger version of yourself some advice, what would it be?
"Mom will get over it if you quit college. Nobody else will EVER care that you graduated, ever."

. What was the last dream that you had about?
I was at a house party, and Chris Hayes was there too.

2. Does it hold any significant meaning to you?
I think I miss socializing more and watch too much political news.

3. Do you dream in color or black and white?
Sometimes both. When I was young, I used to think music videos looked like dreams
4. What is the most frightening dream you ever had?
Had some weird ones, but maybe when I've dreamed that Mom got bad health news.
5. Is there one dream that stays clear in your mind despite the fact it was more than a few years ago?
Last year, I kept dreaming about feeding a friend of mine,(sometimes from my breasts, which added to the "WTF?" of it all, and made it stick in my head, despite the mushy thoughts we've exchanged--if you have this dream, it's not a new fetish, but a sign that you want to take care of the person you have it about. He told me later that the times I had it the most, he was really struggling--I waited awfully long, because the dreams made me embarrassed, but now I think it's wild that we're connected like that.

What is your favorite fruit?
Watermelon. Once wrote a drabble about it that bordered on being smut. Don't know what happened to it. maybe also cherries.

2. What is the most overrated fruit?
Don't know, but it seems like it's been a long time since I had a delicious apple that was.

3. What is the most underrated fruit?
nectarines or plums, maybe?

4. Which fruit is the most beautiful?
I think they are all beautiful...the ripeness and all the colors kind of remind me of the beautiful parts of bodies...is that too much of the Georgia O'Keefe answer?(I love those, too)

5. When you're making a fruit salad, how many fruits do you put in it, and which one, how many fruits do you put in it, and which ones?
Sometimes the simplest are best, like strawberries and bananas. But It can be fun to put in a lot.
chicating: I have a new dragon (Default)
How many meetings do you have this week? Let's count classes as meetings.
Only one this week, but it was special, with Rep Grijalva's chief of staff, the big boss of PDA, my boss and someone from S. AZ PDA.

2. How many of those meetings are in-person (as opposed to online or by telephone)?
Social workers keep threatening to go back in person, but it hasn't happened yet. don't miss it.

3. Is anything actually accompliished during the meetings you attend?
Yeah, sometimes. Sometimes it's just "putting the dots in, like the commander likes," because the state makes me. But that(sorta) keeps the wolf from the door and such.

4. Do you enjoy the meetings you attend?
I like to learn and make a difference, so once in a while...

5. Do you do anything special to keep yourself entertained during long, boring meetings?
writing, doodling, daydreams...I slid into someone's DMs once..glad I didn't get caught.
chicating: I have a new dragon (Default)
. What is your full name?
Erika Dawn Jahneke(Yes, I was born in the seventies)

2. If you could, would you change part of your name? To what?
Don't most girls fall in love with, like, glamorous names when they are ten? I think I can deal with not being Alexis, now, though.

3. Favourite girl's name? Both Samantha(now with the cat) and Miranda are on this list but I'm not Candice Bushnell.

4. Favourite boy's name? For a boy,(or my male characters) I like to keep it simple, like Brian or Noah.

5. Would you name your child after a character in a book or movie?
Maybe...funny cause people think I was, because of the woman on "All My Children"(Mom swears otherwise.)
chicating: I have a new dragon (Default)
ese questions were written by [livejournal.com profile] upupandaway.

1. What was the first album you ever bought?

2. What format was it? (cassette, CD, other?)

3. How old were you?

4. Where did you hear it?

5. Did your parents approve?
1. Can't remember what the *first ever* was, but I earned the money to buy the Dirty Dancing soundtrack so that's a good story. I used to help my stepdad write/type complaint letters, not because he needed help bitching...he *had that covered* but he had a real thing about trying to teach me about Hard Work and Earning Rewards and such, and it's hard to get a criplette a summer job, unless it's something you expect her to do for, like, always. But he wanted me to have the dubious salvation of higher ed, so..(The world is an imperfect place...there were weeks of things to gripe about)
2. It was a cassette. I played it a lot.
3. About thirteen.
4. EVERYWHERE. That movie was such a monster. It was cool for me to love something the other girls liked.
5. mom liked it better than stepdad...pop culture that wasn't Star Trek or Get Smart usually annoyed him.
