Faith moved closer to the male Watcher, exuding sweat and slightly stale Poison. “I could take it out in trade, but that’s not Slayer-y is it?” It was comically easy for her to slide her hand into his dress-pants pocket. He looked like he wanted to groan too, but he stopped himself.
It was sad. Even before she saw his shiny-looking wallet with five tightly-folded twenties in it, as if this weedy guy’s mom had given him movie money or sent him on an errand or any number of childish things Faith knew about from watching stolen cable on an ancient TV that was never quite the right color and made the episodes she watched on it look even more like dispatches from space than they felt. “How far can I get on this?” she asked.
His eyebrows knit together angrily and he looked ready to bawl her out, but she licked her lips and looked deeply into his eyes.
He was not as old as he looked, maybe just a few years older than she. He liked to be helpful and have the right answer. He grabbed a notebook out of a duffel bag she hadn’t noticed, rifled a few pages filled with tiny handwriting. “ Maybe…Baltimore. Sometimes they call it Charm City.”
“That?” she said, stuffing the money in her bra. “ Has my name all over it.”
